THANDI NTULI DIKELEDI

Thandi Ntuli comes from a lineage of rich musical heritage, being the niece of guitarist, pianist and lead vocalist of 70s pop fusion band Harari (The Beaters), Selby Ntuli. Her song 'Dikeledi is featured on the new Brownswood recordings compilation Indaba Is. Recorded close to Johannesburg over 5 days in the summer of 2020, Indaba Is "resuscitates a collective of  South African black bands from a COVID-19-induced standstill; with newly composed improvised music & Jazz created by the country’s blooming new school jazz scene". 'Dikeledi' opens with sea of sax and harmonised phrases, which lie over thundering low-end. As the song progresses, it gains a peaceful temperament thanks to twinkling keys and uplifting sax. Thandi's vocals are lusciously soul-inflected, switching between English and South African dialect. In a press release, Thandi explains: "As a young African whose experience of the world has been in the context of growing up in an urbanized, post- colonial and apartheid world, I have often felt removed from a deep understanding of our own cultures and beliefs. The Westernized perspective has increasingly dominated my outlook. This song is therefore, a remembrance of our True Identity as Higher beings". Indaba Is is out today on Double 12" LP, CD & DD. -Ellie Rose-Davies
